Apartment: you will be provided with two bedrooms and living room apartment. The living room, bedrooms, kitchen, and bathroom all provided come with a complete set of living facilities. A desktop computer and a printer are also provided with free access to the Internet through our campus servers.
Hotels: There are many hotels near the University, Such as Zhangye Hotel, Ganzhou Hotel, Huachen Hotel, and Dianli Hotel. Dianli Hotel is the closest located hotel and has the service contract with our university. Our foreign guests can get discount accommodations at Dianli hotel.
2. 吃饭 Food
Campus: There are several restaurants and dining halls in the southern and northern parts of the campus to provide various delicious and quality foods at low prices.
Off campus: Around the university are many restaurants, mainly located along the European Street and Ming Qing Street. They are all within a ten minutes walk.
You will be provided with a bicycle, which you can use both during your campus activities and non-campus activities like shopping. You may also choose to take a bus or taxi. Bus No. 21 and 23, which only charges 1 Yuan passes by the front gate of our university and will take you to many parts of the city. A taxi charges costs 5 Yuan within 2km and additional 1.4 Yuan for each kilometer.
To visit other cities, you can choose to travel by train or plane. Nearly 50 trains pass by Zhangye Station every day. Many stop at the popular destinations of Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, Hami, and Urumqi. Out west, and Lanzhou. Xi’an, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Guangzhou in the east. Zhangye Airport also has airlines to Lanzhou, Xi’an, Beijing, Chongqing, and Urumqi. Book your ticket as early as you can especially if you plan to travel or return home because it is very difficult during peak seasons to obtain a ticket.

Hexi University is located in Zhangye City, Gansu Province. The city lies in the middle of the Hexi Corridor, and includes Ganzhou District, Linze County, Gaotai County, Shandan County, Minle County, and Sunan County. With a total area of 42,000 square kilometers and a total population of 128 million, it is a national historical site with deep and cultural known as famous Chinese tourist destination.
Long ago Zhangye city was named Ganzhou Prefecture and was a well-known corridor to the Western Regions. Its beautiful scenery has been compared with areas south of the Yangze River, and is often called “Golden Zhangye”. It is also known for its long history, rich cultural heritage, splendid mountains, and honest folkways. Zhangye also has the National Wetland Park which is the wetland park closest to downtown area, the world’s largest indoor clay sculpture of Reclining Buddha on wooden base, the rare treasure Zhangye Scripture, grotto art treasures like Sunan Matisi Grottoes, Jintasi Grottoes, Wenshusi Grotto Clusters, the most beautiful land for – Danxia Landform, the most intact ancient capital of the Northern Liang - Camel City ruins, the national classic Red Army tourist spot - the West Route Red Army Memorial Museum, the world’s largest Royal Army Horse-Breeding Ranch - Shandan Army Horse-Breeding Ranch, etc. These splendid and unique tourist resources have made Zhangye a very attractive tourist spot for foreigners and Chinese citizens alike.
Zhangye has numerous kinds of unique foods stemming from ancient times. The region produces a lot of wheat every year, most of its foods are made from wheat. And its refined and popular foods have all kinds of interesting names. The main varieties include:
臊面Saomian, 小饭Xiaofan, 卤猪肉Pickled Pork, 香饭（西北大菜）Xiangfan (sliced pork with black fungus & garlic), 油糕Yougao (fried cake), 粉皮面筋Sheet Jelly and Gluten, 搓鱼子Cuoyu (Noodles shaped like fingerling), 拉条面Latiaomian (long and round-shaped noodles), etc.
5. 游在甘肃 Travel in Gansu
Gansu is one of the most ancient “cradles” of the Chinese nation and culture. In ancient legends, Fu Hsi (the mythical creator of fishing, trapping, and writing) and Nüwa (the mythological creator of humans) created civilization here. During Zhou Dynasty Chinese ancestor created farming here, and our ancestors in the Qin Dynasty first began to thrive here, Dadiwan and Majiayao preceded the dawn of pre-historic culture, and the Silk Road and the Mogao Grottoes embodied the essence of the ancient civilizations of the East and West. Gansu Province is also the cradle of China’s petrochemical industry, has Asia’s largest non-ferrous metal base, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Base carries the space dreams of the Chinese people, and the remarkable On-land Three Gorges characterized by green energy development represents the development orientation of characteristic industries.
The great Silk Road, rich ancient civilization, colorful ethnic customs, picturesque and magical natural landscapes, as well as the hero’s footsteps of Gansu Province are worthy of seeing. The Silk Road starts from Xi’an of Shanxi province and stretches for 1600 kilometers to Gansu, and this section only covers a quarter of the whole journey.
Maijishan in Gansu’s Tianshui City has more than 7,000 Buddha statues, and is called the museum of oriental carved buildings. Tianshui is recognized as the hometown of Fu Xi, creator of the Eight Diagrams. A Grand National ritual ceremony is held in June every year to commemorate Fu Xi. The excavation of the Qin’an Dadiwan site traces the history of Chinese civilization back 8,000 years.
Wuwei City is located beyond the provincial capital city, Lanzhou, and at the gate of the ancient Silk Road. It is the home of the Bronze Flying Horse. It is the symbol of tourism in China. The Tiantishan Hill in Wuwei ishome to the most ancient Chinese grotto art, and its Baita Temple shows that Tibet has long been an inalienable part of the Chinese territory.
The ancient Great Wall winding west is a unique landscape on the Silk Road. The Great Walls of the Ming and Han Dynasties are only separated by a distance of less than 100m. And in Shandan, you can also experience the majestic ancient war scenes with thousands of Liangzhou horses. In the late spring and early summer, this place will become a vast sea of rape flower extending thousands of acres.
Marco Polo once lived in Zhangye and spoke highly of the city. The world’s largest indoor recling Buddha can be found here. I Kublai Khan was born in the temple, according to legend. Emperor Zhao Xian of the Southern Song Dynasty became a monk in this temple, and a Golden Buddhist Scripture of the Ming Dynasty regarded as a representative treasure was hidden in the temple and passed on from generation to generation.
The gorgeous hills among the vast Gobi make up the perfect Zhangye-Danxia landform. And the movie A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop, directed by Zhang Yimou was set here. Zhangye Danxia Landform was listed as one of the world’s top ten natural wonders by America’s National Geographic Magazine in 2011. Gansu has always been a multi-ethnic habitation area, with the Yugur people living at the foot of the Qilian Mountains. Yugur people’s homes are surrounded by l vast and beautiful grassland. Their folk songs have been passed down for over a thousand years. The Matisi scenic spot, which is located in Su’nan Yuguzu autonomous county, is a tourist site integrating both grotto art, Qilian scenery, and Yugur ethnic traditions.
Jiayuguan City, located at the hub of the ancient “Silk Road” is the western starting point of the the Ming Dynasty’s Great Wall. It integrates Silk Road culture and Great Wall culture, which influence each other, and was known as a “Strategic Hexi Prefecture” and “Strategic Frontier Gateway”. It has a magnificent and impregnable citadel and bulwark construction clusters. The Qiyi Glacier is a closest glacier toa city in Asia, and you can touch the cretaceous legacy, a crystal and exuberant world, after a two-hour drive southwest of Jiayuguan.
Jiuquan city got its name from a widely circulated story, which says the famous General Huo Qubin of the Han Dynasty defeated the huns and was rewarded with wine. The wine was not enough for all his soldiers, so he poured it into the spring water so as to drink with all his soldiers, hence the name Jiuquan meaning. Today, Jiuquan is well-known all over the world as China’s Aerospace Town. The Jiuquan Satellite Launch Base is one of China three famous satellite launching bases and China’s only base to launch a spacecraft. In Jiuquan, you can enjoy the multi-shaped poplar trees in the Gobi desert. Every autumn, these beautiful poplar trees tell the story of its long history. Guazhou County is known as the “World Wind Bank”. On the way from Jiuquan to Dunhuang, you can see lines of wind power generators stretching in to the horizon.
One day 1,600 years ago, a monk named Yue Zun, with a tin cane in hand, approached Dunhuang. Outside of the town he saw the Sanwei Mountains basked in the golden sunset. The mountain ranges looked like thousands of Buddha statues. He vowed to build Buddha statue grottos here. At that time, Dunhuang had become a link between eastern and western culture. And in the middle of the Tang dynasty, the oasis bustled with merchants on the market. At those times caves of the Mogao grottoes were thriving, creating a great cultural wonder. The Mogao grottoes are a precious historical heritage to China and the world. The Singing Sand Mountain and the Crescent Moon Spring show off the charm of the desert. Like a diplomatic note in hand, you can experience the solemn feelings of Suwu (an ancient diplomatic envoy) and Banchao (a general of the Han Dynasty). The disappearing city walls and eroded castle by wind may fill your mind while you astonish at the magic of times and the mystery of nature.
On the way southwards from Lanzhou, you will set foot on Sangke Grassland, which is a Shambhala – a heavenly home, in the hearts of the Gannan Tibetans. Xiahe Labrang Monastery belongs to one of the six patriarchs of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and is one of the most important Buddhist libraries of the Gelug Sect . It is known as the “World’s Tibetology Library”. At the fourteen Summons Ceremony at the first month of every lunar new year, Labrang Temple and the Langmu Temple at the junction of Gansu and Sichuan hold Buddha Sun-basking ceremonies, which attract thousands of Chinese and foreign visitors. Feng Xiaogang, a famous director, made his film entitled A World without Thieves at these two places. Besides the solemnity and piety, you will also be impressed by the hospitality and generosity of the Tibetans and enjoy the happy prairie life. King Gesar is the longest epic and the only living epic in the world. There are still more than one hundred folk artists singing the great achievements of King Gesar. The Langmu temple surrounded by mountains is also a heaven for photographers. Further southward, you will reach the Rouergai Grassland and the world-famous Jiuzaigou National Park.
The Yellow River starts from Qinghai Province and takes shape in Gansu. In Maqu County on the eastern edge of Qinghai Tibet plateau, the zigzagging Yellow River creates her first huge bend and stretches for over 5,000km after incorporating the creeks of snow water from the Amne Machin Mountain. After the Yellow River goes eastward into the ancient Hezhou – Linxia, you can hear the resounding and bleak singing of the flowers as in the Hezhou folk song Flowers and the Youth rewritten by Wang Luo. The tile carvings found in mosques and almost everywhere integrate both the Chinese traditions and Islamic culture. Such an art relating land to human heart awaits your appreciation. The Hezheng Ancient Animal Fossils Museum is China’s only museum of ancient vertebrate fossils, has a collection of over 30,000 pieces of ancient animal fossils, with the amount ranking first in the world. The eras of survival of monitors, platybelodons and three-toed horse had a time lag of over ten million years. The fossils of them were buried deep beneath different stratums and unexpectedly found in Linxia.
Traveling down river, you come to the three gorges of the Yellow River in Yongjing County. This section represents the graceful charm of Plateau River. The Liujiaxia Reservoir at this location is China’s first large reservoir on the Yellow River established 1949, the surrounding lakes, and wetlands, date plantations and the upstream Bingling Grottoes have developed into a tourist resort.
Unlike the Yunnan stone forest, the Yellow River stone forest in Jingtai County is much rougher and more magnificent with its features unique to Southwest China. Therefore, it has become a base of outdoor scene for movie companies, and many movies, such as Myth starred by Jackie Chan, Kim Hee Sun, etc, were shot here.
Lanzhou is the only capital city with the Yellow River flowing through. The scenery lines stretch over 100km along both sides of the River，like a gradually unfolding handscroll of painting. The Lanzhou locals have their unique attachment to the mother river. Zhongshan Bridge, the first bridge over the Yellow River was built in 1907, and has seen the historical changes of both sides of this great river during the past century. Its magazine Readers and beef noodles are two unique symbols known world-wide.
Unlike the Yunnan stone forest, the Yellow River stone forest in Jingtai county is much rougher and more magnificent unique to northwest of China. Thus become a favorite for film, television program production. Famous movie stars like Jackie Chan, Kim Hee Sun made the film Myth here.
Longnan is like a green island in southeast Gansu where the forest coverage is up to forty percent. Longna is remarkable for its fascinating scenery all the year round with thousands of mountains shrouded in mist. Waterfalls, reservoirs, and azure pools. The views in Yangba, National Forest Park in Kangxian county, Wanxiang caves in Wudu, heavenly pools in Wenxianm, county and Guan’e valley National Forest Park unfold the scenic beauty typical in south of the Yangtz River.
The scenic Kongtong Mountain is the first Taoist mountain in China to rises on the loess plateau east of Gansu. Emperor Huangdi was said to have come for the Tao. Visitors pray and cultivate themselves here. Miles away is the palace of Queen mother. Available to the Taoist Goddess each time she visits.
The Silk Road lasts 3000 miles. The Yellow River civilization has been flowing for 8000 years. Every step you take is full of culture heritage, and every glance you cast is filled with miles of scenic beauty.
